Good news for starry sky advocates! Montana Office of Tourism is working to extend the Trail to the Stars program statewide. Originally developed for three tourism regions (Central Montana, Southwest Montana, and Missouri River Country) the program will now be expanded statewide and bring on board the other tourism regions: Southwest Montana, Glacier Country, and Yellowstone Country. Montana's seventh tourism region is Indian Country and those dark and special places will be included within the other six.
The program visually orients visitors to the darkest places (with the brightest stars) in the state and identifies parks, campgrounds, and other great places to visit where you can experience the darkest of night skies. You don't need a degree in astronomy to appreciate the cosmos out here.
Night sky enthusiasts travel far and wide to stargaze in our state and now it's easier than ever to find the special places. Take advantage of Montana's endless outdoor recreation and breathtaking landscapes by day, then bundle up and prepare for a show by night. With remote destinations free of light pollution and millions of acres of public land, you're bound to see more stars, planets, and even the Northern Lights in Big Sky Country. Keep your eyes on this website... we'll keep you up to date on all the details.
